Biblical Women

“And do not forsake your mother’s teaching” (Proverbs 1:8)                                    

I am taking this injunction and exploring the teachings by example of Biblical and post-Biblical women from traditional sources: the Bible, Midrash, Talmud etc.

I have prepared a series of images of modern women acting out the appropriate scenes. By choosing photographs of actual real people, I am forcing the viewer into the situation, making it more immediate -I hope- and am inviting the viewer to consider the choices made by Tamar and Zipporah, Ruth and Esther, Rahav, Rizpah, Avigail.

We have a lot to learn from stories from Scriptures. The incidents described often highlight the bravery, originality and determination which our female forebears wrought. In our patrilineal traditions, the female leaders are sometimes overlooked. This is what I am trying to redress and spotlight in this project.
