Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts
MAHJ Round Book of Esther, Eastern Europe, 19th/20th centuries

© Dagmara Budzioch, Photographer: Budzioch, Dagmara, 05.03.2015
The Book of Esther inscribed in the concentric circles, in a cursive Hebrew script. In the center, the benedictions recited before (recto) and after (verso) the Megillah reading are penned; the latter is followed by the scribe's signature. The manuscript is not decorated but the layout of the text alludes to micrographic designs so popular in Jewish manuscripts.
Summary and Remarks

In the text of the Book of Esther, the numbers of chapters in Arabic numerals are inscribed.

The Museum stores another Book of Esther written in circles - Inv. D.01.004. Three other exemplars penned in circles are stored in an Israeli collection.

Codicology

The text of the Book of Esther is inscribed in a cursive Hebrew script in the concentric circles. The letters are 1-2 mm heigh but not all of them are of the same size; the smallest are the letters in the outermost circle. Also, the thickness of the letters' components is very differentiated; some of them are very thin, while others are very thick. Some letters are combined together.

The benedictions are inscribed in the center, in the straight lines and not in the circles. The diameter of the circle is ca. 65 mm. The size of the letters is very differentiated. The Tetragrammaton is abbreviated as 'ד.
