Jewish Architecture Great Synagogue in Bârlad – Main prayer hall – Tribes of Israel
To the main object: Great Synagogue in Bârlad – Main prayer hall
Murals on the lower perimeter walls of the main prayer hall depict the emblems of the tribes of Israel. The paintings take the shape of decorative panels with images of garlands, lyres, and Magen Davids. The panels bearing the emblems of the tribes of Judah and Gad feature special octagonal framing and are positioned on either side of the Torah ark. The upper portions of these two panels depict two birds (peacocks) and a laver or similar vessel. The remaining emblems appear within medallions on their respective panels. The emblems for some of the tribes are depicted in a non-standard manner.
