Modern Jewish Art
  Minkowski, Despair

© Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Photographer: Unknown,
The picture depicts an old Jew and a young Jewess sitting close together in a dark room. The old white-haired, bearded man in the right foreground is hunched forwards. His hat and clothes are dark. He is pictured in a contemplative state, with his grey eyes cast downwards. His right elbow rests on his knee and the fingers of his right hand are poised near his lips in a pensive gesture. His left hand is closed and rests on a flat surface at the lower right corner of the painting. The young woman's head is resting on her hand. Her expression is contemplative, her gray eyes are turned to the right, over the man's head. Her dark curly hair is wrapped in a light scarf.
