Modern Jewish Art
  Zaltsman, Square with a wheel

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 09.1995
The drawing represents a view of an imaginary town looking absolutely empty. The buildings in the town are made as though from solid stone and sometimes roofed with rough wooden boards. Wooden fences, poles and sharpened stakes are seen between the buildings. In the foreground there are two low houses, a fence, two boards covering a pit, some strange construction with wooden poles and a ladder, and two "buildings" comprised of stone blocks, covered with wooden roofs. In the central part of the drawing, behind the houses there is a huge axis with a wheel on its left end and with a stone block in the middle. The axis is fixed horizontally on two pillars. To the left there stands a two-storied arched building. Its protruding left part has three stories with low arches and a semi-circular balkony. Behind the building one can see a rectangular tower with a steeping roof and a small upper story - a rectangular lantern. In the centre, in a distance, a round tower is situated. It has two levels and looks like a fortress tower crowned with a low cupola on a drum. A wooden dais on four wooden poles, with a ladder set against it, stands in front of the tower. To the right there is a complex building. Its central part is cut with four tall arches and its right part with two lower ones. Several levels-terraces of the building are connected by external stairs. In the background one can see the outlines of mountains.
