Modern Jewish Art
  Akselrod, White Poles in Minsk

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 04.1994
The work represents a scene of deportation of the Jews from Minsk during the Civil war (1918-1921). On the foreground to the left there are two sitting and one standing market-women. By their legs one can see baskets with potatoes. To the right on the foreground there is a porch, on the upper step of which stands a woman. She is standing with her back to the spectator and looking at the Jews passing by. On the lower step of the porch there are represented a sitting man and two children standing nearby. In the center of the composition there i srepresented a crowd of the Jews with bags moving from the left to the right. Two armed horsemen are urging the people on. The figure of the first one is situated behind the market-women. The second one is shown in the center on the background. To the right, to the left and on the background there are represented city houses which set off the composition. The figures on the foreground and the horse on the background are only partly covered with paint. Therefore the white paper can be seen through them.
