Modern Jewish Art
  Destroyed Synagogue

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 02.1994
The picture represents upper interior part of a synagogue floor with rafters and boarding, over which imaginary beasts are painting. A big blue triangle with red horizontal strips occupies the center of the composition. The big Hebrew letter "Shin" is written at the top; a pinkish rectangle with fantastic yellow bird and plants is set in the center of triangle. An imaginary black-yellow lion with wings, painted in profile, facing left, is placed at its bottom part. Two imaginary figures with big eyes and ears, feathers, and five-cogs crown are painted in upper right and left corners against a background of diagonal red and yellow strips. At the bottom of the triangle an inscription "Razrushennaia sinagoga [Destroyed synagogue]. Grobman." is written by brush with black gouache in square Cyrillic letters. The big inscription "ve iachilu ha shamaim ve ha aretz" ["Thus the heavens and the earth were finished..."] at the very bottom of the composition is written by brush with black paint in big square Hebrew letters.
