Sacred and Ritual Objects Parokhet and Kapporet, Hungary, 1908 (?)
The burgundy parokhet is made of velvet. The parokhet is rectangular and has a matching kaporet . At the center of the parokhet, two rampant lions supporting a Torah^Crown~ rise over a wreath of flowers. An inscription appears between the lions and reads:
"כ'ת'" "Crown of Torah(int.)"
A dedicatory inscription appears in the middle of the wreath:
"לזכר נשמת הח')החסיד? החכם?( / ר' יהושע גוטטמאנן ע'ה##שהלך לעולמו יום ט' לחודש / כסלו שנת תרנו נדבו/ זוגתו מרת מרים שתי')שתחיה(/ ובניו ובנותיו/ שיח')שיחיו("
Translation: In memory of the soul of the righteous (the clever?) (int.) Rabbi Yehoshua Guttmann, may he rest in peace (int.)/ who went to his world on the 9th day of the month of/ Kislev, the year (5)656 (=1896) dedicated/ his wife Mrs. Miriam, may she live a long life (int.) and his sons and daughters / may they live a long life (int.)"
The inscription continues beneath the wreath:
"שנת ו'י'א'מ'ר' י'ה'ו'ש'ע' אל כ'ל הע'ם לפ"ק"
Translation: The year 'And Joshua said to all the nation' (=1978!!)
The parokhet is decorated around the central design with scattered flowers,and is edged with a foliate border. The matching kaporet is also decorated with the floral motif and has a cantilla fringe on its lower, undulating edge. An inscription appears in the center of the kaporet:
"זה' הפרכת אשר לפני ה'"
Translation: This is the parokhet which is before the Lord
Both the parokhet and kaporet have brass hanging loops.
