  Parokhet

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Soudack, Ruth, 29.8.1990
The white parokhet is made of satin (it is restored, and the original seems to have been velvet). The parokhet is rectangular, and has a matching kaporet. In the parokhet's center, two columns rise over rectangular pedestals with a star motif. The capitals are surmounted by rampant crowned lions~ facing Tables^of^the^Covenant~, surmounted by a Torah^crown~. The lions~' crowns are embroidered in metallic, blue, and purple thread. The Torah^crown~ is couched in metal thread and appliqued with blue and turquoise velvet. The Tables^of^the^Covenant~ are appliqued in turquoise velvet, in the center of a starburst pattern couched in metallic thread. The ten commandments are couched on the tablets. An inscription appears under the Torah^crown~: "כ ת" "Crown of Torah"(int.)##An inscription appears above the Torah^crown~: "אבינו מלכנו פתח שערי שמים לתפלתנו" )תפילת שחרית לעשי"ת וימי צום( "Our father, our king, open the gates of heaven to our prayers" (From the morning prayers for the ten days of repentance and fast days) A dedicatory inscrption is couched in the center, beneath the columns: "זנ )זאת נדבת( האשה הצנועה והחסודה מ##חיישרה אשת המנוח כ'ה )כבוד הרב( ישראל יהודה##האפמייסטער ז"ל בק"ק האלאש##בשנת ז'ה' ה'ש'ער' ל'ה' לפק" "This was dedicated (int.) by the modest and gracious woman Mrs.##Haiah Sarah, wife of the deceased honourable Rabbi(int.) Yisrael Yehudah##Hoffmeister, of blessed memory (int.) in the holy community (int.) Halash## in the year 'This is the gateway to G-d' (5)622=(1862)" The entire central section is enclosed in a rectangular border of geometric design, couched . In each of the bottom corners of this rectangle, there appears a single, couched star. The parokhet is bordered with an industrial ribbon. The matching kaporet is decorated with a metallic and yellow fringe on the bottom, and a geometric, couched border on the top and sides. Only a few letters of the inscription remain: "ת בח ש בכ לי ח כי ח לי ה מ לאל"
