Before the Jewish community Rino oe-Tefillo moved to this building in 1896, this community used a building along the Waterlooplein. Between 1896 and 1943, the Jewish community used the building of the Nieuwe Kerkstraat as their new place for religious services. The basic layout of this synagogue did not contain a women’s gallery and the austere exterior of the building made it difficult to recognize its religious function.
