Synagogue in the Librije in Zwolle, The Netherlands

© Willy Lindwer, Photographer: Lindwer, Willy, 2002

The building was originally used as a library as part of a larger monastery which dated back to 1467 but lost its function during the Reformation. The building with its high gable roof was repurposed as a synagogue in 1757/58. During this time the main entrance was created alongside the Waterstraat. The synagogue was renovated and provided with gas lighting in 1860.

The building lost its religious function in 1899 as the worshippers moved to the synagogue at Samuel Hirschstraat 8. The Torah Ark which dated back to 1757 was moved into the small shul next to the new synagogue. The Broerenkerkplein synagogue was heavily renovated by P. J. H. Cuypers in 1901, after which the original building became unrecognizable. The building is currently used as the restaurant Bij Giel.
