Sacred and Ritual Hanging oil lamp, Morocco, late 19th-early 20th century
The hanging lamp is made of brass and consists of a holder and a hanger.
The holder is composed of four chains of elongated links. A floral link connects the chains to each other. The lamp is hung by four chains from a graded dome-shaped canopy. The chains are inserted through hooks, and composed of elongated links. The canopy has a wavy edge and is decorated by foliate motifs and openwork triangles. Four short chains are suspended from the canopy's edge. Only one of them is carrying a pendant in the shape of a hamsah.
A hook connects the canopy to a flat symmetrical hamsah with equally spreaded fingers. The space between the fingers is in the shape of a window topped by an horseshoe arch. The thumb is in the shape of a bird's head and is turning outwards. The hamsah is decorated by foliate and floral motif. An openworked geometric pattern depicts the center of the hamsah.
A movable ring is inserted through a ring at the top of the hamsah.
