History/Provenance
Herman Hailperin (1899–1973), born in Newark, New Jersey, was a descendant of rabbis on his father's and mother's sides. He was ordained a conservative rabbi in 1922 at the Jewish Theological Seminary and became the spiritual leader of Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue, where he served for over 50 years. A scholar in the field of medieval philosophy and theology, Hailperin also taught Jewish history at the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University.
