Sacred and Ritual Objects Spice container, Ukraine, 19th century
The spice container in the shape of a tower,is made of silver and consists of a base, a shaft, a body, a roof and an apex. The raised square base has a pierced geometric design around the side. Its top grades towards a square pedestal from which stem four curved wires, forming a shaft. In the middle of the shaft is a round ball through which the wires pass. The wires then emerge from the top of the ball, spreading outward to support the body. The body is rectangular. Each facet is decorated with an openwork floral design. On two of the facets there is a bird in the foliage, and on the third, two intertwined dolphins. There are rods at each of the corners of the body. The door on the front is arched and closes with a catch. An undulating parapet tops the body. The roof is in the shape of a pyramidal spire. Its base is graded and decorated with a floral pattern. The apex has a ball surmounted by a swallow tailed pennant.
