Sacred and Ritual Objects Torah shield, Ukraine, 19th c.
The silver Torah shield is rectangular and terminates with a semi circular arch. A central plaque, that repeats the shield's shape, bears an inscription that indicates the day of use,in two lines, in square linear letters, and reads: "שבת##קדש"" "Shabat Qodesh" (holly shabat) Surmounting the inscription there is a dear that is kneeling on his front legs, his head is turned back, and he is scratching hus body. The plaque is flanked by two lions rampant regardant with reaviling tongue. they stand on a foliate decoration that come out of a sea-shell, below the plaque. Above the plaque there is a crown that a foliate motif come from underneath.
The shield is framed by a foliate band.
Two round holes for the chain are pierced on the upper shoulders. Two long holes for the crown are pierced above the lions heads.
