Modern Jewish Art
Meir Akselrod, Stage design for "The Jacquerie" by P.Merime (1932)

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 04.1994
The picture represents a view of a vilage street. Two-storey open-worked construction is situated around a semicircular square. It is built of high pillars and large shingle roofs. Low wattle-fences are connecting the pillars on different levels. In the center there is a large roof resembling a cupola. The left part is occupied with windmill sail-arms. To the right there is a large scarecrow with brooms instead of arms. A suspended ladder is leading to the second floor of the "building" from the left. In the center one can also see the banisters of a stair which leads from the rised forepart of the stage to the lower distant part. A backdrop is painted with green, the floor with violet and the roofs with grey and blue colours.
