The work is composed of two parts: an upright painting and accompanying pallete. The upright rectangular panel which stands up in the background is attached by two hinges to the wooden palette which lies down before it. A black thread is stretched from the top of the canvas to the side of the palette. Streams of dried paint squeezed from a tube lie at the center of the palette with yellow, orange, and green paint stains to the right and red stains to the left. A portrait of the bearded artist is painted on the canvas in black outlines with stains of red, orange, yellow and green colours. He looks out from the canvas as if looking into an unseen mirror.
