© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 1982

Northern Wall

Gad is depicted as three circular tents staked into the ground (Gen. 49:19). The central one has a Star of David as its apex. The cartouche and the medallion are surrounded by barley.

Asher is depicted as olive branches illustrating the blessing: "…his bread shall be fat…" (Gen. 49:20). The cartouche and the medallion are flanked by barley and a pomegranate branch.

Joseph is depicted as a palm tree with dates hanging down on either side of the tree trunk, alluding to Joseph as a righteous and illustrating the verse: "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree" (Ps. 92:12). The cartouche and medallion are flanked by pomegranate and palm fronds.

Benjamin is depicted as a hand holding a pomegranate (see: Remarks: no. 3). The cartouche and the medallion are surrounded by palm fronds.
