Sacred and Ritual Objects
  Torah mantle, Thessaloniki (Salonika)

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 1992
The trapezoidal Torah mantle consists of a cloak attached to a round top. The cloak has a vertical back opening, while the front is decorated with six heart- shaped leaves set as a roundel, enclosing a radiating medallion. Four foliate patterns are embroidered on its corners and point towards the centre. A dedicatory inscription was added to the top and bottom of the central motif. It is embroidered in square, filled letters, which reads: "הקדש/ סולטאנה די יצחק/ ראזון הי"ו (ישמרה צורה ויחיה)/שנת התרעד 5674."   "A dedication of Sultana (the wife) of Isaac Razun, may the Lord sustain and protect her. The year 5674 (1914)." Scrolled stems frame the entire cloth.  The round top has two holes for inserting the staves. A fringed strip surrounds the top of the cloth and its edges.

Online collection of the ritual objects from the E. Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute is available here: http://cbj.jhi.pl/collections/964689

Summary and Remarks
A collection of ritual objects was confiscated from the Greek Jews when they were transported to Auschwitz during World War II. This Torah mantle was handed over in 1948 to the museum from Narozno, a city in Silesia where the Nazis stored the objects.
