Jews of Mukachevo, deported for extermination

Description

The plaque is a rectangle, featuring the map of Israel from which "grows" a seven-branched menorah. Its left branches in a right angle are broken. In the lower right corner there is a Magen David. On the left side, two squares with Ukrainian and Hebrew inscriptions are situated.

Inscription

The Ukrainian inscription reads:

Звiдси в 1944
роцi почався
смертний хiд
у безвiчнiсть
тисяч евреïв.

Установлена
в квiтнi 1994 р.

Translation: From here, in the year 1944, began the death journey to the eternity of thousands of Jews. [The plaque was] established in April 1994.

 The Hebrew inscription reads:

בשנת 1944
התחילו מכאן
להוביל אלפי
יהודים לדרכם
האחרונה אל
המוות

Translation: In the year 1944, [they] started from here to lead thousands of Jews to their last way to the death.

The site is a meeting ground for memorial ceremonies on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27th January), International Day of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps (11 April), and the anniversary of the deportation of local Jews (May 11-23, 1944).
