The following description was prepared by William Gross:
There are only a few extant manuscripts from the Azore Islands from the small Jewish community in that place. The origin of most Jews there was Morocco and they settled there particularly in the 19th century as merchants. A few such manuscripts are from one Maiman Abuchbut, who was apparently a Rabbi in Treceira, the capital. There are several manuscripts of sermons he delivered
There are additions to the printed siddur, some unknown Piyyutim, by Maimon Buchbut. There are 21 groups of pages, totaling 52 pages which have been added to the printed siddur from Livorno, 1740. There is one part that gives thanks for the rescue from a shipwreck. Rabbi Buchbut was a Moroccan Rabbi who moved to the Azores and lived there for many years. There are a few manuscripts known from his hand, including another one in the Gross Family Collection, but this one is particularly interesting in that it records the additions that the Rabbi made to his own personal prayer book over a period of almost 35 years. Many of the additions are Kabbalistic in nature.
