Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Motele, Poland (today Motol or Motal, Belarus), who perished in the Holocaust. 

Description:

The monument is located in the Western Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives.

The monument is a reddish upright slab inscribed with a dedicatory inscription and decorated with a menorah in the upper part. 

At some later point, probably in the 1990s, two white side walls and a roof were added to the red slab. The side walls are inscribed with the names of Jews from Motol, who perished in the Holocaust and the pogrom in 1920. An ornamental iron fence with Stars of David and a menorah was added to encircle the monument. 

In front of the memorial, there is a small stone structure with a door, the structure contains the scrolls with the victims’ names.

The monument bears Hebrew inscriptions that honor the memory of the community. The community name is emphasized through the use of a larger font size. Inscriptions indicate that the monument contains a scroll with the names of the victims and the ashes from Auschwitz.

Translation:  For these I weep/ Lamentations / A memorial for the Jews of Motele who were murdered by the on the holy Sabbath the 9th of Av, 5701 2nd August 1941 / May God avenge their blood / From the four winds, come O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live/ I will bring you up from your graves, my people, and I will bring you into the land of Israel/ Ezekiel.

מי יתן ראשי מים ועיני מקור דמעה

ואבכה יומם ולילה את חללי בית עמי ירמיהו

אלה שמות קהילת קדושי מוטלה ומשפחותיהם

שנהרגו בשבת קודש ט' מנ' אב התש"א 2.8.1941

ע"י הגרמנים ימ"ש. 226 משפחות כ-1400 נפשות.

Translation: Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears/ that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people/Jeremiah / These are the names of the holy community of Motele and their families who were killed on the holy Sabbath the 9th of Av, 5701 2nd August 1941/ by the Germans/ may their name be obliterated / 226 families approximately 1,400 souls.
