What is Commemorated?

The synagogue of Virovitica

Description

Two plaques are placed on a modern building constructed on the site of the synagogue (for photos of the synagogue, click here).

The left plaque is inscribed in Croatian:

Na ovom mjestu
stajala je sinagoga
virovitičke židovske zajednice
sagrađena 1863. godine,
a srušena početkom drugog
svjetskog rata 1941. godine.
Virovitica, 1996. godina

Translation: On this place stood the synagogue of the Jewish community of Virovitica, built in 1863, destroyed in the beginning of the Second World War in 1941. Virovitica, 1996.

The right plaque is inscribed in Hebrew. The original plaque, documented in 2000, was made with typos:

Translation: Jewish Community of Virovitica. On this place stood the synagogue of the Jewish community of Virovitica, built in 1863, destroyed in the beginning of the Second World War in 1941. Virovitica: Tishrei of the year 5757 from the creation.

By 2021, the Hebrew plaque was replaced by a new one, with almost identical text without typos:

Translation: Jewish Community of Virovitica. On this place stood the synagogue of the holy community of Virovitica. The synagogue was built in 1863 and destroyed in the beginning of the Second World War in 1941. Virovitica: Tishrei of the year 5757 from the creation.

Both inscriptions are surmounted by Magen David.
