Art Alone
© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Unknown,
The initial word for the book of Genesis בראשית is written in a panel in the upper part of the page. The initial word is written in gold on foliate scrolls incorporating birds and dragons. The panel is flanked by the naked figures of Adam and Eve. The word "אדם" "Adam" is inscribed above the figure on the right (now erased) and the word "חוה" "Eve" is inscribed above the figure on the left. Both figures are standing covering their nakedness with green leaves. Their faces and the upper part of their bodies, are erased. The words "עלי תאנה" "fig leaves" are written on Adam's left leg. Another illegible inscription is written beneath his legs. In the lower margin of the page, the decorative masorah magna, written in micrography, outlines a dragon with a green head, probably alluding to the snake in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:1-6).
