The initial word of the book of Deuteronomy, is written in a panel in the middle of the two left columns of the page. The letters are written in gold on blue ground, decorated with foliate scrolls. The bearded Moses stands on the right, above the letter א 'aleph'. He wears a pointed Jewish hat and a golden mantle and holds the rectangular Tables of Testimony in his right, outstretched hand, while turning his head to the right. The Tables are inscribed: "ויחר אף משה וישלך מידיו את הלוחות" (Ex. 32:19) "And Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands..." (KJ). The golden calf, which caused Moses' anger is depicted on the left. It stands on its hind legs. The words, "עגל הזהב" "the golden calf" (Ex. 32:19) are inscribed outside the panel, on the left. The initial word is also illustrated with two hunting scenes. An archer is depicted inside the letter ה 'hei'. He is dressed in red, and shoots at a rampant lion, place within the letter ל 'lamed'. Above the letters, a dog chases a red stag. The dog is inscribed with the word "כלב" "dog" and the stag is inscribed with the word "צבי" "deer". A parrot is depicted beneath the letter א 'aleph'. The face of the archer is erased while that of Moses is intact. In the lower margin of the page, the decorative masorah magna, written in micrography, outlines interlaced lozenges which are enclosed in a rectangular frame.
