The silver rectangular case is composed of two parts connected by a hinges. The box is framed on two sides by a zigzag motif and on the remaining two sides with a meander design. The frame on the top part depicts two people in the center. One is a Jew with a kippah and the other is a gentile wearing a uniform. There is an inscription inbetween them in square filled letters which reads:
בינו/ שנות/ דר-ודר תרכ'ו 1890
The second half bears an inscription in Russian that reads:
И.О. Линецкому / писателю /ко дню /юбилей / XXV / летней / 11 Ноября / 1890 года / его литературной / деятельности / от меценатов г. Одессы
("For I.O. Linetsky the writer for the day of the 25th anniversary of his literary activities from patrons in Odessa (on the) 17th of November in the year of 1890".)

There are four hallmarks on the box. 1.The hallmark depicts St. George on a horse killing the dragon facing left inside a rectangular frame with cut angles. This is a Moscow city mark used 1891-1896. cf. Postnikova-Losseva, p.203,
no.2022.##2. The hallmark depicts the cyrillic initials "L.O"(in lat.) over the date 1890 in a rectangular frame with cut edges. This is the mark of Moscow assay Lev Fedrovich Olex who was active 1890-1896.
cf. Postnikova-Losseva, p.205, no.2121.##3. The hallmark depicts the cypher 84 in a rectangular frame with cut edges. This is a Russian quality mark 18-19th c. cf. Postnikova-Losseva, p.148, similar to no.12-15.
4. The hallmark depicts the cyrillic initials "D.N." in a rectangular frame. This is an unidentified artists hallmark, probably belonging to Dimitri Nikolaevich Nikolaev, The owner of a workshop
who was active in Moscow in the second half of the 19th c. or to D.P.Nikitin, an owner of a workshop who was active in Moscow in 1893-1917. cf. Postnikova-Losseva, p.214, no.2420,2421.
