History/Provenance
Nord Goodman described the provenance of the object like this: My brother Leonard and I are the sons of Gerald and Martha Goodman (maiden Rothschild). I live in New Hampshire and my brother lives in New Jersey. Our parents were German refugees during the war. My mother was forced from her family farm house outside Hamburg Germany by the Nazis in 1939 and spent the war years in London. She moved to New York City sometime after 1945. My father’s family is from Frankfurt. He escaped to the US in about 1939. Both parents are now deceased. Most members of the Goodman and Rothschild families emigrated to New York. Others settled in Montreal, Mexico City, and London. My aunt, Sitta Hirschhorn (nee Rothschild) escaped to Mexico City and lived there with her husband Moses and their son Justin. Justin has four children. My uncle moved to New York City and lived his entire life there with his wife, Heddi. They have two children, Arlene and Larry. I was born in New York City in 1948. I remember growing up with a picture of Jewish art in our home. I believe it belonged to my mother’s family in Hamburg, but am not certain. After my mother died in 2004 I took possession of the picture. I do not know much about either parent’s life in Germany. All four grandparents died before I was born. In September 2016 my wife and I visited Yad Vashem. Since then I have felt that Holocaust History Museum would provide a better home for this piece. Earlier this year that art was sent to Yad Vashem.
