The tesserae are made of limestone. They are laid in curved lines within the figure and in straight parallel lines in the background.
The horse's outline consists of one line of black tesserae. The horse and leaves are surrounded by one line of background tesserae.
The average number of tesserae per 10cm2 is (10x11). A higher density can be found in the background: (12x11). A lower density is found in parts of the body: (9x9).
Different hues of red, ranging from pink to burgundy, are used, besides the different hues of black and white.
