The initial word panel for the book of Genesis is divided into two compartments. The lower one contains the initial word written in burnished gold on a blue ground decorated with white scolls and two
animals, a lion and an ostrich.
The upper compartment composed of trefoil arches surmounted by buildings and turrets. In the arches are two animals, a dog on the right and a cow on the left.
The initial word for the Targum is written on the right within a panel topped by a turret flanked by two leaves.
The decorated massorah magna, written in micrography in the lower margin outlines on either side of the lines a lion head with a leafy tong extending form its mouth.
