Art Alone

By the Scribe: Fols. 1, 4, 7, 12v, 20v: The title of the first book  (fol. 1) and the initial words of the following sections (articles 1-5; fols. 1, 4, 7, 12v, 20v) are written in built-up ink letters of 2 lines height within rectangular panels filled with scrolls of blue and red filigree penwork and extending flourishes.

The composition of the panels is a scheme of filigree work consisting of a fan-shaped motif enclosing the initial word letters into one unit. On fol. 12v, although executed by the Scribe, the design of the fan-shaped filigree is modified into an open flower with a blue centre or a pearl-like motif above the letters, but the usual fan-shaped filigree fills the roundels which spread to the right of the panel.

Long flourishes extend from the short side of the panels above (fol. 1) and along the right side of the text column (fols. 1, 4), ending in the margins in roundels enclosing a rampant lion and human and animal faces (fols. 1, 4). Shorter extensions (fols. 12v, 20v) contain animal heads and biting dragons.
