The Spartakovskaia Synagogue is another example of the split-story type -where the women’s gallery is formed by splitting a story internally while representing it visually externally.  The building, of painted plastered brick, is a single large volume.  The sanctuary space is indicated on the exterior by the fenestration: large, round-arched windows with sturdy moldings, separated one from another by pilasters.  In contrast, fenestration of the entrance and women’s gallery portion of the building is of smaller, square windows.  Interestingly, rather than the conventional 12 windows, the sanctuary here is illuminated by 14 (one of the current windows was originally blind and was the Torah niche).

The interior has been so radically altered as to render any observations concerning the original finish moot. Though fundamentally significant forms, particularly the women’s gallery and the slight height differential between the entrance and sanctuary, still remain.
