Fol. 48v: The large initial word “Thy words” (אמרתך) opening the piyyut of Shaharit for the second day of the New Year prayers is set on the top of the page and decorated by artist A. The initial word is written in very dark brown display letters with circles enclosing stylized rosettes set on the junctions of each of the letters. The letters are surrounded by wriggly-work in brown and red ink, extending in some places into foliate flourishes. The wriggly work around the letter “aleph” (א) extends on the bottom right of the leg into a vulture’s head and on the bottom left of the leg into a dragon’s head with an open mouth, biting into the continuation of the wriggly work. A partially cut off decoration for a catchword also executed by artist A is set on the bottom of the page, depicting a hooded man, facing left and holding a dog whose head is turned upwards towards the man.
