The work represents a genre scene in a schtetl at the time of the Civil war (1917-1921). Slightly to the right from the center of the paper one can see a small metall stove, so called "burzhuika", with a tin chimney sticking out of it. Several children have settled around it. Two of them - a boy and a girl - are sitting on the flore before the stove. The fird boy is standing behind it. They are all eating potatoes. A bowl with potatoes is standing on the stove. To the left, along with the standing boy there stands a woman with a child sitting on her right hand. She is standing half-turn to the right leaning with a left hand on the chimney. She is wearing a kerchief, a blouse, and a long skirt. In the depth of the room, behind the stove there is a bed with a man with a bandaged head lying on it. A bedside-table with medicines is standing near the bed. To the other side of it there is a chest of drawers with a bottle on it. Over the head of the woman and over the bed on a horizontal branch of the chimney there hangs a linen. On a distant wall of the room one can see a picture. The whole work seems unfinished. Only the central part of it is covered with paint. The sides of the drawing are left untouched.
