The page opening Tractate Avot includes a panel which occupies the upper part of the text space and executed in the first stage of decoration. The panel is decorated on top with three arches, encloses the initial word “Moses” (משה) written in burnished gold display letters on a red ground. The panel is surrounded by a frame filled with white heraldic animals set within blue lozenges and red and black animals set within white and yellow escutcheons. The animals include eagles, lions, deer and a unicorn. The lozenges are set against a green ground of floral triangles, while the escutcheons are set on a blue ground. The arches topping the panel are decorated with yellow crockets and gold finials which top is cut out.
