Fol. 134v: Along the right side of the text column four initial letters for the verses of the piyyut “Omez Adirei kol hefez” (אומץ אדירי כל חפץ) [Davidson, I, א, 1868], in the repetition of Musaf for the first day, which starts on fol. 131, are written in dark brown display script one below the other, within a vertical panel. The initials alternate with four medallions encircling two-legged hybrids and dragons in spared ground technique on blue and red ground. The panel is divided into triangular compartments of alternating red and blue filigree pen-work scrolls, each section encloses one letter or one medallion. Flourishes stem from the upper corners of the panel into the upper margin, while red tendrils surround it.

Summary and Remarks

In the upper and lower margins of fols. 134v-135, another piyyut “Supreme King, God who dwells on high” (מלך עליון אל דר במרום) [Davidson, III, מ, 1653], is copied in lighter brown ink by a later scribe (Hand 1), while the last part of this piyyut is written in the main text of fol. 135. We can assume that the missing text was originally written in the central bifolium of the quire and then recopied on fols. 134v-135 by Hand 1. Indeed this quire now includes only ten leaves instead of the 12-leafs quire which is the common structure of the quires in this manuscript. Since the flourishes in the upper margin cover parts of a few letters of the additional text, we can deduce that this addition was copied  before the manuscript was decorated. Also the unusual lack of flourish stems in the lower margin supports this assumption that the decoration was done after the text was copied. The same hand also added the text in the margins of fols. 78v-79. see also: Quires, Remarks
