Art Alone
© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Unknown,
A rectangular panel beneath the text space which spans the width of the page, contains two tinted scenes illustrating the search for leaven. On the right a woman holding a candle searches her pantry filled with barrels and live fowl. On the left a man and a child search a bedroom for leaven. A small animal crouches beside the bed. A small square panel at the top of the page on the right, encloses the tinted initial letter, "Bet," commencing the benediction for the burning of the leaven. The letter surrounds the figure of a man searching for leaven. He holds a bunch of feathers in his right hand and a receptacle for the collection of the leaven in his left. Beneath, another square panel encloses the tinted initial letter, "Kaf," commencing the Aramaic passage recited after the burning of the leaven. The letter surrounds the figure of a man about to throw the leaven into a fireplace. The text space is framed by a rounded arch executed in spared ground technique. The arch rests on two columns with floral motifs at the base.
