A tinted, rectangular panel beneath the text space enloses a scene of the Israelites toiling in Egypt, illustrating the above text beginning, עבדים היינו לפרעה במצרים, "We were Pharoah's bondsmen in Egypt ..." In the foreground, three Israelites carrying loads on their backs are driven by two Egyptian taskmasters, one of whom wields a sword. In the right background, Pharoah, crowned and holding a sceptre, looks on through an open window. Pyramid-like structures stand in the background and in the far-left foreground. In the left background is a scene of the Exodus, illustrating the continuation of the events described in the passage above, ויוציאנו ה' ממצרים ביד חזקה, "... And the Lord our God brought us out therefrom with a mighty hand" (Deut. 6:21). A group of Israelites is depicted carrying their belongings walking into the desert. A winged angel holding a sword in his right hand hovers above them, illustrating the above words, ובזרוע נטויה, "And with an outstretched arm." This is explained later in the Haggadah as follows, זו החרב. כמה שנאמר וחרבו שלופה בידו נטויה על ירושלים, "...this refers to the sword, as it is said, 'And a drawn sword in his hand outstretched over Jerusalem" (I Chron. 21:16). A curved, ornamental pediment ending in scrolls and executed in spared ground technique, crowns the text space.
