A floral and foliate full page frame fills the outer margins of the opening page. The coat of arms of the Gallico family, contained in a medallion framed by a wreath, is set in the center of the foliage in the lower margin. A cock stands on the right side of the medallion surmounted by a crescent moon and a six-pointed star. On the left is a stalk of wheat with a snake coiled around it.

Summary and Remarks
A cock was represented in the coat of arms of the Gallico family as a visual pun on the family name (in Italian, gallo means rooster). A similar coat of arms appears in two other manuscripts: as part of the decoration on fols. 43v, 63 of the Rothschild Mahzor, Florence, 1492, (NY. JTS.ms. 8892) and as a later addition on fol. 16 to the Golden Haggadah, Barcelona, ca.1320, (London, B.L. Ms. Add 27210).
