39 History/Provenance
chorazin has generally been identified as the site of Khirbet Karaze in the foothills raising above the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.Corazin have been mentioned in the New Testament (Matthew 11:21,
Luke 10:13) as one of the Galilian towns condemned because they did not repent. In the rabbanic sources Chorazin was identified as one of the many "medium site town" in Palestine (Tosefta Makot 3:8).Chorazin
is mentioned in the Talmud in connection with the 'omer',(the first harvest offering):the 'omer' would have been brought to the temple from Chorazin (Babylonian Talmud,Menahot 85a).
Eusebius, writing at the end of the forth century tell us that Chorazin is a destroyed village apparently in fulfillment of the prediction of the gospels.
The site was first identified with ancient Corazin by C.W.M.Van Venlde a dutch officer who traveled in Palestine in the middle of the nintinth cetury.
Two German scolars,Heinrich K. and Carl Watzinger (1905),Who were surveying the Galile looking for ancient synagogues, identified the remains of the ancient synagogue of Corazin.N. Makhouly and J.
Ory (1926),then inspectors of the Department of Antiquities of the mandatory goverment of Palestine cleared the synagogue and removed a later
building erected on its northern corner. They olso collected the many decorated architectural fragments scattered about the site.Yeivin Z. and his expedition from the Department of Antiquities began the
excavation in 1962-1965.They excavated the central part of the town:the synagogue two domestic complexes (A,B),and a public building (C), and a Mikveh.
This expedition worked at Chorazin seven years from 1980-1986 for sevral months each year.
Some reconstruction of the site were done in 1980 on the behalf of the Israel National Park Authority.
The synagogue according the numismatic findes discovered below the stone floor pavement built in the beginning of the forth century. In the second half of the forth century
the synagogue was partly destroyed in an earthquake. The synagogue
reconstructed again at the end of the forth or et the begining of the fifth century. The plaster floor belong to this phase.
