Jan's illustration for the title page for Bialik's Poems of Fury shows a frame made of three familiar Symbolist elements representing Death: skeleton parts (at the bottom of the frame), skulls (on the left) and baby faces that look like dead embryos. A personification of Death - a skeleton dressed in shrouds is on the right. Its head is crowned with entangled snakes, visual symbols of Death and Evil. Jan's opening page may point to her giving visual aspects to Bialik's words; the poet is known to have explained to her (in Russian) the contents of certain poems and she would, in turn, use her vast visual image vocabulary of the Symbolist style.
