20 Description

The Jewish section in the Žale municipal cemetery was established after the extension of the municipal cemetery in 1926. In 1964, the Jewish section with the remains of the deceased and their tombstones was moved to the current location. This is the only section in the Žale cemetery defined according to religious criteria.

The Jewish section is a plot measuring 25 x 50 m, surrounded by a low wall of bushes to distinguish it from the rest of the Žale cemetery and attached to its eastern wall. The entrance gate is situated on the western side of the section.

Currently (2018), there are in the section 27 tombstones, dated from 1912 to 2001, and a Holocaust memorial.

20 Description

The gate to the Jewish section of the cemetery consists of two rectangular pillars and double-wing metal door with Magen David.

A plaque above the gate is inscribed in Hebrew and Slovenian. The inscription reads:

בית החיימ [!]

כי עפר את:[!] ואל עפר תשוב [בראשית ג, יט]

Izraelitsko pokopališče

The House of Life

for dust you are, and to dust shall you return [Gen. 3:19]

Jewish cemetery

The Hebrew inscription contains mistakes:

1. The last letter Mem in the upper row is written in the form for the middle of a word, not in its final form.

2. את in the verse from Genesis should be אתה.

It is said that the gate was brought to the current location from the pre-war Jewish section.
