36 Decoration Program

Decorated title page (fol. 1): The decoration of the manuscript consists of one decorated arched gate on the frontispiece executed in black ink framing the title of the book and the colophon of the author within the gate, while the panel at the bottom of the basement encloses the colophon of the scribe (see: Colophon). The arch is topped by a broken tympanum enclosing on the top a cartouche inscribed יהוה (G-d) in spear-ground on a black ink background. The architectonic elements are decorated with small and intense foliate and floral motifs and with hatchings and geometrical patterns. The gate recalls the frontispiece of Cod. Hebr. 23.

Two schemes illustrating the text on fols. 17v and 18.

36 Summary and Remarks

The manuscript includes the theological treatise Ez Hayyim (The Tree of Life) composed in 1346 by the prominent Karaite theologian Aaron ben Elijah of Nicomedia (Nicomedia, 1328/1329 – Constantinople, 1369), preceded and followed by the introductory index and summary of the chapters Derekh Ez ha-Hayyim, written in 1497 by Caleb Afendopulo (Adrianople, before 1430 - Constantinople, 1499).

Aaron ben Elijah was the "first-rank jurist, exegete, and last Karaite philosopher" (Ankori, p. 132). He is called ha-aharon "the Last" (אהרון האחרון) or, rather, "the younger", in distinction to the century-earlier Aaron ben Josef, ha-rishon, "the first"אהרון הראשון) ), i.e., "the elder". All the Karaite manuscript calling Aaron the Younger a "Nicomedian". It is one and only evidence of the existence of Karaites in Nicomedia in Byzantine times. Beside "The Tree of Life", the system of religion's philosophy, his most important books are Gan 'Eden (the Garden of Eden. A Karaite Code of Laws) and Kether Torah, (The Crown of Torah. A Commentary on the Pentateuch), both published in the Firkowitch Press at Gozlow, 1866-7.

Caleb Afendopulo Derek E ha-ayyim," published by F. Delitzsch in his edition (Liepzig, 1841) of Ez Hayyim. He wrote a similar introductory index to Judah Hadassi’s "Eshkol ha-Kofer" under the title Naal Eshko" (Goslow, 1836; see Cod. Hebr. 23).The scribe, Yeshuah Josef ben Moshe copied the works from the manuscript of another scribe Daniel ben David Yerushalmi, between 26th December 1824 and 17th January 1825 (i.e., the making of this 83 pages manuscript fulfilled in 23 days). Although Yeshuah Josef does not states the place of copying, we know other two manuscripts signed by him: one in a private collection, copied in Kukizow in 1820, the other in Oxford (Bodleian Library MS Reggio 4; see: Neubauer, Catalogue of Hebrew Manuscript in the Bodleian Library, I, Oxford 1886, no. 245) – a corpus of commentaries by the Karaite Aaron ben  Josef "the First" (see above), copied in Halitz in 1826. These other two manuscripts indicate that the scribe Yeshuah Josef ben Moshe was active in the area of North-Western Ukraine. The scribe himself gave the manuscript to the Karaite scholar Abraham ben Lewi Leonowitsch (d. 1851) together with other manuscripts, including the Vienna Cod. Hebr. 23.

Cod. Hebr. 22 reached then Samuel Loeb Goldenberg who was interested in giving it to the printer Anton Schmid of Vienna for publishing it. However, Schmid did not publish it because it did not get the permission to publish it following the censor's erasures [Karl-George: this is not so clear] and then he gave it and other manuscripts (Cod. Hebr. 21, 23, 73) to the Hofbibliothek, Vienna in 1845. (see: Zeitschrift 19, 90; 21, 67).
