Name of the place: Bershad

Name of the synagogue: Synagogue in Bershad (Berszad)

Location: Ukraine; Vinnits'ka; Bershad

In  of 1998 the architects I. Fugol, I. Czurilik, P. Khmelevskii completed the field documentation and the measurements. O. Boiko wrote the description.

1. History of the place:

1.4.2. Foundation (existence) of synagogues, beit-midrashes, yeshibots, orphanages, old people's homes, cheders, craft schools, cemeteries, hospitals, mikvaot, burial societies, social organizations, sport clubs, publishing houses, etc.: A Jewish dwelling house and a synagogue have been preserved in the shtetl (Yiddish; meaning small town with prevalent Jewish population pre-Holocaust).

1.4.3. Demographic and statistical data: There is a Jewish community and the synagogue is currently active.

2. Topography: The synagogue is in a building is a perfect example of a Podolian in a small Jewish town.

4. History of the Building:

4.6. Rabbis or other people of note connected with the history of the synagogue: A tzadik may have lived in the western volume and the synagogue may have been a kloyz.

5. General description of the exterior of the building: The synagogue looks like a common rural building. It has been built in traditional folk design. The roof is constructed with tar paper and the walls are wattle and daub and white-washed.

5.1. Division into the volumes: The synagogue has two main volumes: the prayer hall and a western volume containing the women’s section and living quarters.

5.2. The main and side entrances: The main entrance is on the southern wall. It leads to the main prayer hall by a cement stairway. A very small door is located on the same wall serving as an alternative entrance to the western volume.

5.3. Surrounding buildings: The building is stands alone, but it is surrounded by many other town buildings.

5.4. The later extensions and/or reconstructed parts of the building: Modern brickwork has been added to the northern wall of the western volume.

 5.5. The walls: The walls are 25 to 30 cm thick, half-timbered, and white-washed. The northern wall of the western volume is newer and built of bricks.

5.6. The attic wall: There is no attic.

5.7. The roof: The roof is hipped (four-sloped) and covered with tar paper. It is beginning to deteriorate.

5.8. The general impression of the synagogue and its attachments: The building looks like the traditional building of a shtetl.

5.8.1. Impression of an expert, as an architect: An interesting old building. The size and some other traits are the only indicators that it is not a dwelling.

5.8.2. Personal impression of an expert, as a human being: It is an old building.

5.9. Architectural style of the building in each of its constructive periods: The building looks like a common rural house without any particular style.

6. General description of the ground plan:

6.1. Rectangular or oblique outline of the plan: The outline is rectangular.

6.2. General exterior measurements: The length of the northern façade is 21.39 m, the eastern façade is 12.15 m, the southern façade is 21.45 m, and the western façade is 11.92 m.

6.3. Orientation of the ground plan: The synagogue is oriented in the traditional way with the Torah ark facing the east. The exception is that the main façade is the southern one and it leads out to the street.

7. Descriptions of the facades: The walls are generally smooth and decorated only by windows. Each façade is similar.

7.1. The Eastern Façade:

7.1.1. General measurements of the façade: The length of the eastern facade is 12.33 m. The height of the wall from the conditional zero up to the bottom of the roof is about 3.39 m. The height from the conditional zero up to the gable is about 6.08 m.

7.1.2. Number of tiers of the façade: The facade is one tier.

7.1.2.1.1. Door / window openings: There are 4 windows.

7.1.2.1.2. Outlines of the openings: The windows are rectangular.

7.1.2.1.3. Frames of the openings: They are all wooden frames with two-sashed windows. The doors of the main entrance are paneled with wood, and the doors into the synagogue are made of wooden planks.

7.1.2.3. Finishing: The waddle and daub façade has been white-washed.

7.2. The Northern Façade:

7.2.1. General measurements of the façade: The length of the northern facade is 21.39 m. The height of the wall from the conditional zero up to the bottom of the roof is about 3.3 m. The height from the conditional zero up to the gable is about 6.08 m.

7.2.2. Number of tiers of the façade: The eastern volume is one-tiered and the western volume is two-tiered.

7.2.2.1.1. Door / window openings: There are 4 windows.

7.2.2.1.2. Outlines of the openings: All the windows are rectangular and original to the building.

7.2.2.1.3. Frames of the openings: They are all wooden frames with two-sashed windows.

7.2.2.3. Finishing: The waddle and daub façade has been white-washed.

7.3. The Western Façade:

7.3.1. General measurements of the façade: The length of the western facade is 11.92 m. The height of the wall from the conditional zero up to the bottom of the roof is about 3.37 m. The height from the conditional zero up to the gable is about 6.1 m.

7.3.2. Number of tiers of the façade: The facade is one tier.

7.3.2.1.1. Door / window openings: There are 4 windows.

7.3.2.1.2. Outlines of the openings: All the windows and the doors are rectangular and original to the building.

7.3.2.1.3. Frames of the openings: They are all wooden frames with two-sashed windows..

7.3.2.3. Finishing: The waddle and daub façade has been white-washed.

7.4. The Southern Façade:

7.4.1. General measurements of the façade: The length of the southern façade is 21.45 m. The height of the wall from the conditional zero up to the bottom of the roof is about 3.55 m. The height from the conditional zero up to the gable is about 6.08 m.

7.4.2. Number of tiers of the façade: The eastern volume is one-tiered and the western volume is two-tiered.

7.4.2.1.1. Door / window openings: There are 8 windows and two doors.

7.4.2.1.2. Outlines of the openings: All the windows and the doors are rectangular and original to the building.

7.4.2.1.3. Frames of the openings: The windows on the eastern section of the façade are the same as the other facades (wooden and two-sashed frames). The door of the main entrance (also on the eastern section) is paneled with wood. The western section contains 4 small windows that open into the women’s section and one that opens into lower tier. The western section also has 1 small door that opens into the lower tier.

7.4.2.3. Finishing: The waddle and daub façade has been white-washed.

8. Description of the interior space, room by room: The building has 2 main volumes: the main prayer hall and 2-tiered volume containing the women’s section and living quarters (perhaps an apartment for a rabbi). The main inner wall divides the two volumes.

8.1. Description of the room: Because the synagogue is still in operation, the modest interior of the main prayer hall has been completely preserved. There are eight wooden columns that support the 2 large wooden beams of the ceiling. The columns divide the space of the prayer hall into 3 naves. The bimah sits in the center of the hall and it has a simple, square, wooden construction. The Tora ark is situated on the western wall and it is a carved wooden closet. In the western wall there is a door with wooden stairs. Narrow windows that look into the prayer hall from women’s section are situated in the upper part of the western wall of the prayer hall. In the center of that wall there is a former door, which has been obscured by the floor at some point. Aparently the level of the prayer hall floor was once as low as the height of the first tier of the western volume.

8.1.2. Original/actual function: The entire synagogue continues to operate in its original fashion.

8.1.3. Pavement: The floors are wooden, made of planks.

8.1.4. Walls: The walls are white-washed.

8.1.4.2. Outlines of the openings: The openings are rectangular.

8.1.4.3. Frames of the openings: The frames are wooden and simple.

8.1.4.4. Exterior decorative framing: There is no decoration.

8.1.4.6. Finishing of the wall: The waddle and daub walls have been white-washed.

8.1.5. Floor: The floor is constructed with wooden planks.

9. Torah Ark: The Torah ark has been preserved. There is no Torah niche.

9.1. General state of preservation: Satisfactory.

9.7. Torah ark: The Torah ark is wooden.

9.9. Inscriptions on or around the Torah ark: None.

10.1. General state of preservation: Satisfactory.

10.2. Location, connection with the architectural constructions, material, construction, measurements: The bimah is wooden and is surrounded by 4 round wooden columns. It is sits in the center of the prayer hall and it is elevated by 1 step. Above it on the ceiling is a large Star of David.
