20 Description

Full-page text illustration, divided into three sections each with a scene from Isaac's childhood. In the upper section is depicted the circumcision of Isaac iand in the lower section are seen the sacrifice of Isaac, on the left, and the temptation of Sarah by the devil, on the right.

The Circumcision of Isaac: Two successive scenes are depicted under three trefoil arches in the upper section of the panel. On the right two women by the door of a room (possibly a synagogue) are led by a third woman carrying the naked infant Isaac laid on a piece of cloth. On the left, seated on a two-tiered stool, the Godfather holds the naked child on his knees while a Mohel kneels before him and performs the circumcision with a knife (Gen. 21:4). Both men are bearded and wear long robes and pointed Jewish hats. It may be assumed that Abraham is either the godfather or the Mohel, while Sarah may be the woman holding Isaac.

The Sacrifice of Isaac: Abraham, bearded and wearing a pointed Jewish hat, stands in the lower left section of the panel. He lifts a knife in his right hand and holds Isaac by the hair with his left. Isaac, wearing a long robe, is crouching on his legs and hands on a cubic altar, his head turned to the left. On the top right, an eagle-headed angel emerges from the clouds holding the top of Abraham's knife with his right hand. With his left hand he points at a ram caught in a tree below him.

Temptation of Sarah: A midrashic scene of the devil tempting Sarah is depicted in the lower right section of the page. The devil holds Sarah up in the air to see the sacrifice of her son Isaac. Sarah's arms are outstretched in despair (Midrash Tanhuma, Vayera, 23).

20 Description

The picture is encircled by a wooden frame. The Tower of David is depicted in gray monochrome, seen from an angle on the left, within a frame reminiscent of a television screen. The sides of the wall facing front to the right are lit while the sides on an angle are in shadow emphasizing the protruding corner of the wall. The tower and walls are set against a grayish white background with a pink tone. שלש שנים/Three years as well as a Hebrew inscription are written is written in hebrew beneath the house of the wall in a gray cursive script. The inscription is a pun in Hebrew, which alludes to the double function of the Tower of David as both a Jewish site and a minaret: מגדל דוד מסגדוד מגדל סגיד Tower of David, David Mosque, Worship Tower. Roofs of other buildings are discernible by the tower, suggested by shading above the wall on the right.

20 Description

An altar is depicted at the center of a canvas, on a greenish-brown ground with desert hills in the background. Two brass colored wooden staves stand on the floor and lean against the right side of the picture, throwing their shadow on the canvas. The altar, seen from the side, is composed of a platform on which a ramp leading up to the base is reminiscent of a stage, on which stands the altar itself. This central brick altar is surrounded by a fence on three sides. A green and pink brick protrudes upwards from each corner of the altar representing the four horns of the altar. Reddish black fire burns in the top of the altar, inscribed above in Hebrew cursive script in black letters: מערכה. This word has a dual meaning: Place of the Fire/Battle. A brass plaque is nailed to the canvas on the base of the altar above the platform. An inscription is hammered on the plaque in Hebrew block letters, and is painted in green: נחשת/Brass. Half of the stage is painted a green color which dripps over a lower layer of brown, similar to the color of the ramp. Another Hebrew inscription is written on the side of the brown wooden ramp in black cursive letters:  כ/קבש/ס which can be read as two words: כבש meaning Sheep/Ramp and קבס means Nausea. In the upper left corner of the canvas a number 8, made of brass, is attached to the painting, above the depiction of a stick on a bright yellow background. Below it is an inscription of two words in Hebrew block letters. Each word is set within a square נחש הנחשת/The Brass Serpent.

20 Description

The picture represents a relief map of Israel from an eastern point of view. The Mediterranean is depicted in the upper third of the picture in sky blue with white stains which also suggests sky. The land is mostly yellow and on it there are brown and reddish areas representing the Galilee Mountains, Mount Carmel, and Judea Mountains. The Sharon region is represented by a green stain between the coast and Judea. On the Judea mountains is written in Hebrew block, black, cursive and very dominant letters: בגדה יהודה that can be read in two ways: 1. Judea which is in the bank (West Bank?); 2.Judea has betrayed. Jezreel Valley is represented in the same dark yellow connecting between Mount Carmel and the deep blue, Lake Kinneret. The Jordan Valley and river as well as the Banias above the Lake Kinneret are represented by a bright green line. The sky blue Dead Sea is in a pale green valley surrounded by the yellow Arava and Negev. Beyond the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea are red mountains of Edom, again within the yellow surroundings. On the margins of the map short and long lines intermittently are representing the measuring scale of the picture.
