20 Description

The circular portrait of a man is painted in prominent brush strokes in strong colors. The man's yellow face is outlined in brown thick contours, and his yellow and blue beard and long brown and blonde hair suggests fire. The black hole formed by his mouth encloses a Hebrew inscription in white block letters as follows: אב אמ אמת. The first two words are joined to a larger third word. They compose a pun, combining the words "Father" and "Mother" to create the word "Truth".

20 Description

The triptych is composed of three wooden vertical panels. The side panels are shorter and narrower than the central one and are joined to it from the top. An enthroned human figure is painted on a sky-blue background in the central panel. The picture is devided into four horizontal parts. The angular point of the upper blue, pentagon shaped, one is at the figure's chest. The angular point of the second green part is at the figure's loins. An eye appears in the upper right corner of the green part. The angular point of the third red part is at the figure's feet and has an eye depicted on its lower left side. The rest, most the lower part of the picture, is black. The top of the central part of the picture is joined by a small piece of white canvas on which is painted a golden crown within a grey frame. On both sides of the crown are two stretched yellow strings joined by tacks to the figure's feet. Two yellow lines are drawn similarily reaching the figure's hands. A red line is drawn on the figure's right and is drawn until her left hand. A blue line is drawn on the figure's right connected to her right hand. The figure's hair is made of yellow strings. A little round yellow framed mirror is joined to her face and hence conceals it. Only her lips and teeth are reaveled below the mirror. From behind her shoulders two long arms darker than the figure's body are depicted, framing it and giving the impression that the figure is a kind of marionette. The left hand is made of cardboard and joined to the canvas as well as the figure's shoulders. From the golden circle on the figure's heart a black line is drawn to its loins which are similarly concealed by another golden circle on which the tenth letter of the Hebrew alphabeth, an initial of god's name, is written: י . Black lines drawn from the figure's shoulders to a golden circle located between the figures left feminine breast and its right masculine breast. Black lines are drawn over the figure's body in the shape of the Tree of Life. From its loins emerges two other legs appearing to belong to the darker figure whose hands exist alongside the central figure. The two feet of the bright central figure are joined together wheras the feet of the darker figure are spread out.

20 Description

The synagogue is a simple freestanding building of irregular shape situated among dwelling houses.  It consists of two volumes – a two-storey main volume which contains the prayer hall and a single storey northern volume with auxiliary premises.

The main volume is a two-storey high trapezoid structure covered by a hipped roof.  It contains the main prayer hall with women's gallery on the west and north, a small prayer roomin the north and a staircase to the women's gallery.  The south facade of the volume faces the street; its west facade faces the courtyard, which is separated from the street by a grillwork fence.

The northern volume is a trapezoid single storey structure, connected to the north facade of the main volume.  It consists of four rooms: two communal offices, a kitchen and a bathroom, and it is covered by a lean-to roof.  It has two windows and two doors leading to the courtyard.

Description of the exterior:

The south or main facade is facing the street (figs. 6, 7, 8).  It is framed by two pilaster-strips and divided into two sunken fields by a central pilaster-strip.  They are topped by a wide blank freeze and a moulded cornice.  An onion shaped dome on a low octagonal drum protrudes over the roof, above the central pilaster-strip.  Each facet of the drum is pierced by a small bull's eye window. Two globular finials on cubic bases are mounted over the lateral pilasters.  Each finial and the dome terminate with a Star of David apex.

Each field of the facade has an arch enclosing a triple window with round arches and colonettes.  The lunette of each arch is decorated by a pair of double-stepped depressed circles, and the arch is decorated with five protruding voussoirs.  The windows are set back in moulded frames.  The spandrels of these frames are covered by concrete plaster in the "fur coat" technique.  The panels under the protruding window sills as well as the lower part of the pilasters are currently covered by white ceramic tiles with a diamond-shaped pattern made from blue tiles.

The western facade (figs. 8, 9) is comprised of two tiers and framed by two pilaster-strips.  Another one divides it into two unequal sections, corresponding to the main synagogue in the southern part and the small prayer room in the north.

The lower tier of the southern part is preceded by a gabled entrance hall flanked by two rectangular windows.  The entrance hall’s western wall has a wide rectangular window topped by two round ones.  A door leads into the entrance hall from the south, whereas its northern wall is blind.

On the upper tier of the southern part are three rectangular windows corresponding to the women’s gallery, which extends in the interior on the north and west walls.

In the northern part there is a door which leads to the small prayer room.  A window above it gives light to the women's gallery.

The northern facade is three tiers high (fig. 10).  There are two windows on the first tier, corresponding to the small prayer room.  A side entrance covered with a lean-to roof leading to the women's section is located in the eastern corner.  In the second tier there are three windows, corresponding to the women’s gallery, and on the third tier there is a small window on the eastern corner corresponds to the attic.  All the openings are rectangular.

The east wall of the main volume is a blank firewall (fig. 11).
