20 Description

The synagogue in Hornburg was built in the years 1762 - 1763. The buliding stopped functioning as a synagogue in 1882, as there were fewer than ten Jewish adults in Hornburg. The death of the last Jew in Hornburg was in 1923. In 1924, the synagogue’s interior (the Torah ark, bimah, women's gallery, benches, wooden plaques, interior dome, etc.) and ritual objects were transferred to the Vaterländische Museum (located in the Aegidien church) in Braunschweig. The pieces of the synagogue were on show in the museum until 1945 when it was moved to storage. The exhibition was reinstalled in 1976 when the new building of the museum was built.

According to a color drawing made in 1924, the vaulted ceiling of the Hornburg synagogue was painted with images of the Sanctuary. The Tabernacle (shown as a tent)was on the eastern side, the Ark of Covenant on the western side, the Temple Menorah on the southern side, and the Showbread table on the northern side. In its center of the synagogue ceiling there was an interior dome, painted blue. The dome is the only part of the ceiling that was preserved in the museum. On the lower rim of the dome there is a painted balustrade. The four painted posts of the baulstrade support four vases of flowers.

20 Description

The central part of the eastern wall was occupied by the Torah ark structure. It is an aedicule with two pairs of Doric columns with painter capitals in the lower tier and two similar columns in the upper tier. The niche for a wooden Torah cabinet is still framed with the remains of a stucco band. A large round-headed window above the niche was decorated by a painted frame and a rosette. The frieze above it was painted with a blue curtain, and above that, there is an oculus.

The window niches of the upper tier on the eastern wall were decorated by painted blue curtains with golden fringe. The window niches of the upper tier had decoration similar to the windows of the northern and southern walls.

20 Description

The synagogue in Sighişoara, built in 1911, is a modest Neo-Romanesque building, facing the street with its main, northwestern facade. The façade is crowned by the Star of David and not with the Tablets of the Law, which is rare in Transylvania. The decoration of the main entrance door echoes that of the Torah ark inside the prayer hall.

The prayer hall is spanned with a barrel vault, painted as a starry sky. The hall is lit by eight windows: two in the southeastern wall, flanking the Torah ark, and three in each southwestern and northeastern walls, which are partially blocked by wooden women's galleries. An oculus is placed above the Torah ark. A wooden square bimah is situated in the center of the hall.

The Torah ark is a wooden structure decorated by Stars of David and topped by the tablets of the law. It is flanked by two painted palm trees. The tree on the right side is inscribed צדיק כתמר אפרח ("The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree," Ps. 92:12), and the tree on the left inscribed with the continuation of the verse: כארז בלבנון ישגה ("he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon," Ps. 92:12).

A depiction of the Western Wall in Jerusalem is situated to the right from the entrance door at the northwestern wall of the hall. It looks like a painting is richly decorated frame hanging on the wall. The Western Wall plaza is shown as a narrow lane with a single tree.
