20 Description

The upper part of the ark is flanked by two pilasters. Each pilaster is surmounted by a painting of a vase of flowers. The northern pilaster has a depiction of a destroyed building near two cypress trees. This most likely represents the destroyed Jerusalem Temple. The southern pilaster has a painting of two stone walls with round-headed arches and two high trees are seen behind the wall. This painting likely represents the Western Wall of the Jerusalem Temple.

20 Description

Vol. II, fols. 279v-288: The twelve signs of the zodiac are each depicted within a medallion in the margins of twelve of the eighteen pages (fols. 280v, 281, 281v, 282v, 283v, 284, 285, 285v, 286v, 287, 287v, 288). They illustrate the corresponding Zodiac signs mentioned in the piyyut of Eleazar haKaliri for the prayer of rain  יפתח ארץ לישע (Let the earth open; Davidson, Thesaurus, י 3466) recited on Sukkot. The medallions are framed by a coloured or gold band surrounded by a lace-like wreath or radiating gold dots. The backgrounds are blue, red or tooled gold with all-over geometrical patterns (see Remarks).

II:285 (diameter: c.48 mm):

Libra (Tishrei) is depicted as an empty pair of balanced scales held by the hand of God emerging from a segment of blue sky. The diamond-tooled gold medallion has a red, blue and green frame, outlined with a floral lace pattern in similar colours. The scales illustrate the adjacent text of the piyyut: פלוש גומש (Tilted scales).

20 Description

Judging from the remains of the western wall, the large prayer hall might have once been spanned with a barrel vault.

Originally, the women’s section was on the upper floor, above the vestibule, in the western volume. It seems that in a later stage it was enlarged and a wooden balcony was attached to each the northern, western, and southern walls. Today (2007), only holes in the walls and some remains of beams of those balconies can be seen.

The construction of the balconies likely took place in the 1920s. Perhaps at the same time the prayer hall was painted. A photograph taken in 2000 shows remains of three large paintings on the western wall of the prayer hall. There were no traces of those paintings in 2007.

///ID/18026/

The niches of the windows on the ground floor were decorated by painted frames and rosettes. They are still discernible today (2007). The window niches on the upper tier of the eastern wall had a more elaborate decoration of painted blue curtains with golden fringe.
