The community of Saluzzo, in Piemonte, was established in the 15C., flourished during in the following years, and built its synagogue in the 18C. This Torah^ark was used by the community until the Holocaust, during which the community and its synagogue were destroyed. According to the gabbai, Menachem Perlman, the ark was originally used by aristocrats as a liquor cabinet, and was later converted into a Torah^ark. The paintings were added to suit this secondary usage.

20 Description

A row of semicircular arches with Stars of David inside is painted on both sides of the eastern wall under the ceiling. A painted inscription ממזרח שמש עד מבואו (“From the rising of the sun to its setting”) runs between the arches and windows to the south from the Torah ark, and its continuation מהלל שם ה׳ (“the name of the Lord is to be praised,” Ps. 113:3) runs to its north.

Columns are painted between the windows. Some effaced fragments of similar paintings – columns, arches, and Stars of David – are still visible on the southern and northern walls of the prayer hall. Remnants of painted decorations are visible also on the walls of the women’s section.

The tribe of Zebulun is represented by a ship in the sea, according to Gen. 43:13: "Zebulun will live by the seashore and become a haven for ships."

The pediment of the ark has a depiction of flowers, flanked by two pigeons. Under the scene an inscriptions reads  ויהי בנסע הארן (“Whenever the ark set out,” Num. 10:35) - the opening phrase of the prayer said when the Torah scrolls are taken from the ark to the bimah.

The tribe of Dan is represented by a serpent, according to Gen. 49:17: "Dan will be a snake by the roadside, a viper along the path, that bites the horse’s heels so that its rider tumbles backward."

20 Description

Remains of wall paintings are preserved on the northern part of the eastern wall. The discernable remains allow a reconstruction of the prayer hall’s decoration. The walls were colored blue. Brown pilasters were painted in the piers, with a gray frieze between their capitals, adorned with scrolls. A blue field with a rose and foliate decoration in the frieze between the capitals. The pointed heads of the windows were surmounted by a rocaille painted in grisaille.
