20 Description In the lower part of the page next to the >piyyut> איתגבר בחיליה אדוניה (Davidson, I, א No. 3197, p. 150) for the Sixth Commandment, "Thou shalt not kill", is an illustration within a trefoil arch. On the right is the crowned, enthroned King Solomon "שלמה המלך" pointing to the "valiant Joab" "יואב הגיבור" who has just been decapitated by "Benaiah the courtier" "בניה השר". Benaiah and the head of Joab wear pointed Jewish hats. The inscription above the figures are from the >piyyut> that follows on the next leaf. Near Solomon, the banderole reads "דכיר לך דעמשא ואבנר" "remembered is (the blood) of Amasa and Abner". Above Joab, קיצץ בניה רישיה דיואב בזימני חדא ועל רישי דיואב לבית מלכא של)מה( "Benaiah severed Joab's head with one blow and the head of Joab is on the house of Solomon". Near Benaiah, שרי צווח לבניהו בן יהוידע "And he started shouting at Benaiah the son of Jehoiada," alluding to the >piyyut>, in which a loud argument between Joab and Benaiah is recorded.

20 Description

Vol. I, fol. 47v: The initial word Vayedaber (וידבר, And God spake) of Parashat Vaera (Ex. 6:2-9:35) is written above an illustrative panel in gold leaf on a magenta ground, at the top of the third text column.

The panel (fig. 1) depicts God (erased) reiterating his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob on a blue and green ground, illustrating the biblical text (Ex. 6:2-5) and its commentary (I:48, 1st column; see Klemm 1998, p. 200).

Three men are standing facing a scraped-off semi-circular segment of sky in the top right hand corner, which apparently enclosed the face of God. The first man, Abraham, is holding a blank scroll, his right hand pointing in a gesture of speech, towards the sky; Isaac in the centre is pointing upwards with his right hand, while his face is turned to Jacob, who shows his palms. Abraham and Isaac wear long blue and light brown tunics and a magenta or red pallium respectively; Jacob has a short green tunic and a magenta chlamys. Both Abraham and Jacob have blue hair and beards.

36 Summary and Remarks

The composition (fig.1) shows the foremost figure facing to the right while the central one is turning his face towards the third figure on the left. This compositional formula of three or four standing figures is repeated in two other illustrations (figs. 2, 3), which resemble the depiction of Abraham greeting the angels in the Ingeborg Psalter of north-eastern France, c.1200 (fig. 4).

Fig. 1: God establishes hiscovenant with the patriarchs, Munich Rashi's Commentary on the Bible, Munich, BSB Cod. hebr. 5, I:47v  Fig. 2: Abraham greeting the angels, Munich Rashi's Commentary on the Bible, Munich, BSB Cod. hebr. 5, I:13v   Fig. 3: Job lamenting, Munich Rashi's Commentary on the Bible, Munich, BSB Cod. hebr. 5, II:183

Fig. 4: Upper register: Abraham greeting the angels Ingeborg Psalter, North-east France c.1200,                                                                          Chantilly, Musée Condé MS 9, fol. 10v (Ingeborg Psalter, facsimile 1985)

The scraped off segment of sky at top right apparently enclosed the face of God and not his hand as is usual in Hebrew manuscripts. See for example, the hand of God in Moses receiving the Law in the late 13th-century Birds' Heads Haggadah of Franconia (fig. 5) or in the contemporary Regensburg Pentateuch of c.1300 (fig. 6).

Fig. 5: Moses receiving the Law (top left), Birds' Head Haggadah, Franconia 13th century, Jeruslem, IM Ms.180/57, fol. 23 (Narkiss 1967, pl. 28)  Fig. 6: Moses receiving the Law, Regensburg Pentateuch, Regensburg, c.1300, Jerusalem, IM Ms. 180/52, fol. 154v (Narkiss 1967, pl. 29)

The hand of God also often appears in Greek manuscripts, as for example a 12th-century Octateuch in the Vatican (fig. 7).

Fig. 7: Moses' rod turned to a serpent, Constantinopole (?), 12th century, Vatican, BAV Vat. gr. 746, fol. 162v, upper register (Weitzmann and Bernabò 1999, fig. 619) Fig. 8: Jacob's dream, mosaic, Monreale Cathedral, c.1186 (Kitzinger 1960, pl. 46)

The thorough scraping off of the sky segment in our panel indicates the artist's failure to appreciate the Jewish prohibition on representing God. His Christian sources could have been numerous: the head of God in a segment of sky appears in the Byzantine mosaics of Monreale in Jacob's dream (fig. 8), in Moses receiving the Law on the altar of Nicolas of Verdun of 1181 (fig. 9), and in God speaking to Aaron and Moses in a Franconian prayer-book of 1204-1219 (fig. 10).

Fig. 9: Moses Receiving the Law, Austria, Klosterneuburg Abbey, Verdun Altar, 1181, (Buschhausen 1980, p. 79, pl. 45) Fig. 10: God speaking to Aaron and Moses,  Prayer-book from Franconia (Bamberg?), 1204-1219, New York, PML M.739, fol. 16, upper register http://corsair.morganlibrary.org

An interesting way to avoid showing faces is found in the Ambrosian Bible which was written in 1236-1238, probably in Würzburg, for our patron R. Joseph son of R. Moshe, where the heads are mostly shown from the back. However, in the panel showing Moses with turned face holding the Tablets of the Law, an angel, instead of God is depicted, ordering him to place them in the Ark of Covenant (Ex. 25:16; Deut. 10:2). The angel has an incomplete face: a profile with vestiges of an eye and mouth and no nose (fig. 11). The same applies to the angel in the Sacrifice of Isaac as well as Isaac's face (see Illuminated Document of I:18v).

The semi-circular segment of sky was scraped off, leaving a black ink outline and vestiges of red colour. The faces are erased, but the features of Abraham and Jacob are discernible.

20 Description

The painting depicts a broad river flowing between two shores, one of which is mountainous and the other of which consists of a sloping wood. The sun sets (or rises) over the river in the distance. Musical instruments (lute, clarinet, drum, cymbals, violin) hang from three birches that stand on the gently sloping shore in the left foreground. A stone wall or other masonry is visible behind these trees.
