20 Description

The Great Synagogue in Siret was apparently built in 1840 (Streja & Schwarz p. 106) and reconstructed later. It is situated in the very center of the town. The two-story building faces the street with southwest facade and has a gallery on its northwestern side (bricked between 1968 and 1996). A single story attachment on the southwest side was demolished before 1996.

Fol. 44v: In the lower part of the outer margin is a hand holding a dog by a chain leash. The dog is seated with a puppy or a rabbit between its legs and mucus extends from its mouth. This may allude to the words rubricated סבות השעול "the reasons for coughing" in the text, which is marked by blue wriggly motives. A shield with red stripes is suspended from the wrist of the hand. The title in the upper margin is decorated by a floral motif in brown ink.

20 Description

Fol. 61v:

The biblical text in the centre of the page is surrounded by the Massorah magna and parva, the Targum in the inner margin with Sefer ha-Gan written in two circles above and below it, and in the three outer margins by Rashi's commentary. In the right margin the flow of Rashi's text is cut off at the center creating two short text columns with some Massorah parva text written between them in shaped text, in which the repeated letter lamed fitted one above the other in structures resembling musical notes.

A micrographic arcade of seven arches is placed in the lower margin. This may be a condensed allusion to a narrative illustration of Joseph interpreting Pharaoh's dreams, which includes the storage of the food of the good seven years for the seven years of hunger in Egypt(cf. Gen. 41:32-37) written in this page.
