20 Description

By the Artist: Fols. 16v, 25v, 34v, 39, 46v, 47: The title at the beginning of the second book (fol. 47), the initial words for the other three sections of the first book (articles 6-8; fols. 25v, 34v, 39) and the initial word of the sub-section (fol. 16v; in the 4th article) are written in built-up ink letters of 2 lines height on the parchment ground at the centre of rectangular panels framed by wide borders decorated with scrolls of blue and red filigree penwork. Flourishes extend from the short sides of the panels into the margins ending in roundels,  one of which encloses a lion's head (fol. 25v) and a seated human figure pointing at the text (fol. 34v).

The composition differs from that of the previous group (fols. 1, 4, 7, 12v, 20v): the filigree work frames the initial words and is not used as their background. Furthermore, although the filigree ornaments similarly consist of the fan-shaped club motif, the execution is simpler and the use of colours differs. Some frames (fols. 16v, 25v, 39) are in red filigree decoration with some blue, others are divided into alternating red and blue fields (fols. 46v, 47).

The large panel with the explicit of the first book (fol. 46v) is the most elaborate and differs from the other panels in its large dimension. Below it is a cartouche with the incipit of the second book. Both are decorated with similar filigree pen-work and connected to each other by a 'pillar' drawn by a later hand in a different shade of greenish-brown ink.

Fol. 15: In the centre of the outer margin a magenta panel depicts a naked young woman in a Venus Pudica pose with long light brown hair reaching to the calf, illustrating the adjacent text "Thy breasts are fashioned and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare (Ezek. 16:7). The flowery meadow may in this case allude to Ezekiel (Ezek. 16:6): "I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field".

Within the blue background there is a Hebrew inscription in semi-square script, "maiden" (נערה), by Erhard.

The Latin annotation by Erhard is written in red cursive script:

Next to: רבבה כצמח השדה נתתיך (יחזקאל טו, ז)

Ezech. 16 (Ezek. 16:7).

See: General Document for acanthus branches and Appendix.

This subject appears in Ashkenazi and Italo-Ashkenazi haggadot from the 15th century on, whereas in Sephardi haggadot the text referring to "naked and bare" was not illustrated. Some depictions of a naked maiden relate literally to the words "thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare" (Ezek. 16:7; figs. 1, 2). In the Tegernsee Haggadah and in the Chantilly Haggadah (fig. 2) from Candiathe maidens are depicted as Venus Pudica (Modest Venus), similar to the depiction of the modest Eve in contemporary European manuscripts (fig. 3). Our artist apparently adopted the posture of Eve ashamed of her nakedness after eating the forbidden fruit; or he might have been inspired by a female mandrake similar to that in the printed Hortus Sanitatis of 1491 (fig. 4).

Another rendering of the same subject in Ashkenazi haggadot stresses the idea of multiplication of children, with two flanking a naked woman and a third looking down from a tree, as in the Second Darmstadt Haggadah of the late 15th century from Italy (fig. 5).

20 Description

The prayer hall is oriented towards southeast; a women's section is situated at its northwestern side, in the upper floor, and is connected to the hall through small semicircular windows. The windows of the prayer hall are situated in the upper tier, while the lower tier of the walls has elongated niches. Two-tier curved wooden Torah ark is situated in the center of the southeastern wall and accessed by stairs.

The prayer hall is divided by an arcade of huge pilars into two parts, each ine has its separate ceiling decoration. The octagonal bimah is situated between the central piers. The capitals of the piers are decorated by paintings of bascet with flowers.

Two niches on the northwestern wall of the prayer hall are decorated with Biblical scenes. The northern niche has a depiction of trees in a field with hanging musical instruments (Ps. 137); the southern one shows Mount Sinai with the Decalogue staning on its top in raditating beams of light. The vaults of the niches are painted as sky with six-pointed stars. Lists of Siret Jews who perished in Transnistria are situated inthe niches.
